About Kasper
With a background in the aerospace-industry I have tried to combine my knowledge of lightweight structures made of fiber reinforced plastic with my hobby, which is cycling. As a result, at the beginning of this century I designed many 'carbon' bicycles and built prototypes in my own workshop.
Next to folding bike, track bike and mountain bike frames, I also created prototypes of a drone helicopter airframe and many smaller 'carbon' double-curved parts I designed using CAD/CAE/CAM. The workshop was equipped with a CNC milling machine which I used to manufacture the molds (drawn in Solidworks) for the production of the carbon parts. You can see some examples in the video below.

This is an introduction course consisting of 10 lessons into using fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) in design & manufacturing processes.
At the end of the course you will be able to:
- Compare the material properties of FRP-materials against 'traditional materials'.
- Perform basic calculations using the Laminate Theory.
- Analyse failure mechanisms in relation to 'general design rules'.
- Distinguish between 6 different manufacturing processes (starting with wet hand lay-up, which can used 'at home').
- Make a basic product-design using FRP.
The course consists of:
1. Introduction into fibre reinforced plastics (composites)
2. Anisotropic material properties in relation to other materials
3. Laminate theory
4. Performing some basic analysis and calculations on laminates
5. Failure mechanisms
6. Manufacturing processes: (wet) hand lay-up and Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM)
7. Manufacturing processes: Thermoforming, pultrusion and filament winding
8. Design rules
9. Product design (together we wil design a product by own choice)
10. Development of corresponding manufacturing process
In principle, we always go through 4 steps during the lesson:
Step 1. Theoretical explanation.
Step 2. Applying the theoretical knowledge in an example.
Step 3. Try to make some little tasks yourself.
Step 4. Evaluation of the new theory and the task performed.
If you have some product ideas yourself, we will use them during the lessons!
