About Jorge
I am an award-winning Visuals Editor, photographer, and educator with over twenty years of experience at the intersection of visual journalism, storytelling, and education. My work has focused on translating complex stories into clear, compelling images across digital and print platforms, combining editorial rigor with a strong understanding of what engages an audience.
I have worked in international newsroom environments, including Business Insider, where I collaborated with reporters to shape investigative stories into powerful visual narratives and commissioned photographers around the world. I previously led the photography department at Diario El Nacional through its transition from analog to digital workflows, and I continue to direct long-term visual strategy for major publications at Fundación Empresas Polar.
Alongside my editorial work, I hold an MFA, summa cum laude, from Folkwang University of the Arts in Germany, and I currently serve as Adjunct Professor at Istituto Marangoni Miami, where I teach narrative development, lighting, and post-production within real editorial contexts. In 2024, I received a Miami-Dade County District Commendation for Latent Fissures, a project exploring memory and historical fracture through photography.
I bring the same standards I apply to professional photographers — precision, honest feedback, and a genuine investment in the work — to every student I teach, whatever their starting point.

Teaching method & techniques
My approach comes straight from the real life experience, not the classroom. I treat every lesson as an editorial assignment: we start from a real photographic problem — a story, a portrait, a lighting challenge — and work backward into the technique needed to solve it. Concepts (exposure, composition, lighting, retouching) are taught through practice and immediate critique, the same way I mentor photographers I commission professionally, not through lectures or rote exercises.
A typical lesson
We open with a short review of the student's latest images or assignment. From there, I introduce one core technique or concept and demonstrate it hands-on — camera in hand or inside Lightroom/Photoshop. The student then shoots or edits a short exercise built around that technique. We close with a structured critique, the way an editor reviews a submission: what works, what to fix, and a specific assignment for next time. Every lesson ends with a next step, never just a technique in isolation.
What sets me apart
Twenty years inside real editorial operations — Business Insider, Diario El Nacional, Fundación Empresas Polar — commissioning and directing photographers internationally, combined with an MFA (Folkwang University of the Arts) and a current university teaching post at Istituto Marangoni Miami. I teach the craft the way it's actually practiced at a professional level, with the judgment of someone who has hired and edited photographers for a living.
Who this is for
Beginners who want a solid, correct foundation from day one; hobbyists looking to seriously improve; and students or early-career photographers building a portfolio for admissions, freelance work, or photojournalism. I also work with anyone preparing a specific project — a personal essay, a portfolio review, a portfolio for an MFA application — who wants professional-level editorial feedback.
