About Sarah

Q: How do you get a Philosophy major off your front porch? A: You pay for the pizza Jokes aside, Philosophy is unlike any other discipline in its heavy reliance on reason, theory, morality, and points of view. Many people don't understand it (like my dad who made that "hilarious joke" at my graduation ceremony) and it's my job to help make complex topics and writings into digestible and easy to understand pieces. A study of Philosophy is good for many things: academic courses; developing reasoning skills; making sense of our world today and developing a compelling argument, etc. Even though I offer "touchy" or potentially "controversial" courses such as Ethics, I absolutely will not impress my own personal view on the student. (My students used to ask me all the time and I'd say ask me at the end of class haha.) We will look at issues from all sides, allowing the student to come to their own belief, and to express it well in writing or otherwise.

We will begin by assessing what the student is looking for specifically and how I can help. My approach is to meet each student where they are at and to develop a teaching program accordingly. Classes will be remote, but we will use a variety of subject-matter and subject-adjacent online tools in addition to readings. I'm available for all methods of communication, from video chats to asynchronous chats, emails, etc. Depending on the student's needs, a typical lesson plan would look like this: 1. Background/immersion 2. Primary sources 3."Real life" applications 4. Advanced primary sources and/or specific focus on a particular area of interest or weakness 5. Capstone project (could be an essay or other media - we will decide this together) This is of course a general example; I will work with each student individually to understand their goals and tailor lessons accordingly. My lessons are appropriate for Philosophers or would-be-Philosophers at all spectrums of education. I have years of experience teaching college undergrads, but I also have an advanced degree in Philosophy/Ethics so I'm able to confidently teach a wide range of students. I am a knowledgeable and experienced Philosophy teacher in the areas listed below: 1. Introduction to Philosophy 2. History of Philosophy 3. Ethics 4. Bioethics (both medical and life science) 5. Environmental Ethics 6. Political Philosophy 7. Logic and Critical Reasoning 8. Sustainability: Theory and Practice 9. Feminism / Feminist Ethics 10. Theory of Knowledge (for high school International Baccalaureate candidates) I'm looking forward to working together to immerse in the dynamic, thought-provoking discipline of Philosophy!
