About John

For too long, many high school and college students have struggled to successfully complete long-term assignments and research projects. Many feel overwhelmed and are losing confidence in themselves and their education.

I work with these students to give them the skills to plan, manage and complete any type of long-term assignment or complex project.

I am a librarian and certified teacher who has spent many years working in both secondary and university environments. I’ve used these skills while working in international schools teaching students of varying language abilities.

My unique background allows me to pull expertise from many disciplines to focus on the skills students often lack but are rarely taught explicitly: how to break down complex tasks, manage time effectively and move from reading texts to writing clear, structured essays.

I want to hear your story. I want you to be an independent learner, and manage the skills required to be successful in these open-ended projects.

We will start with a free consultation.

During this we will talk about the areas where you struggle and those where you are more successful. I am a firm believer in goal setting, so we’ll start reviewing your requirements to create a set of concrete goals and activities to meet those goals.

You and I will break down the project into manageable pieces and set deadlines for each step. From this plan we will create a working schedule and a list of deliverables.

Each phase of large projects often requires the student to use different skills. The plan we’ve created will help us organize the topics we’ll cover in lessons.

Each individual lesson will begin by looking backward. What have you accomplished towards meeting your goal since we last met? We will review the project plan to see where your work should be in terms of the project.

We will then move toward today’s topic. For the bulk of the lesson, we will focus on brushing up on the most pertinent areas or skills needed for the current phase of your project. Here, you will drive much of the focus. For example, during the project’s opening stage, the pre-research phase, we’ll cover skills to plan a new project and how to learn about a new topic. We will review how to find simple, yet authoritative resources. We will find who are the important writers in this discipline. During the research stage, we may learn a new method for note taking or annotation. We could review how to analyze resources to ensure you’re getting the information you need. We may learn how to synthesize information from a variety of sources or how to use outlines to improve your academic writing.

Towards the end of the lesson, we will start thinking about the near future. What’s next for you? We will discuss upcoming deadlines. We will focus on what you need to do before our next meeting. Finally, we will reflect on the areas covered in today’s lesson that you understood – and those areas where you need more training.
