About Rijan
I am a post-doctoral biomedical scientist with experience in teaching biomedical science and research to undergraduate students within the laboratory setting. I have also immensely enjoyed teaching English and Maths to students in secondary and primary school. Through my years studying and working in academia, I have come to a realisation that I find giving to my community incredibly rewarding through the medium of teaching and learning and that is my motivation for joining the team at this site.
During my time in university, especially throughout my PhD, getting to a stage where I became independent in my learning and work progress was of paramount importance but, now looking back retrospectively, I know full well that it would be foolish to think that I came to a stage of independence all on my own. Indeed, I received plenty of help along the way, by way of supportive teachers, tutors, supervisors, helpful peers and gracious colleagues. I firmly believe a large reason to why I enjoyed learning about biomedical research so much was because of the support and encouragement offered to me. Of course learning and mastering a craft is highly rewarding in itself but the journey of how one gets to that stage, I believe, strongly affects that person at a much deeper level. This is why I would like to teach younger students interested in the field of science.
As a biomedical scientist, I am naturally highly interested in teaching biology for secondary school students, though I am also comfortable teaching chemistry and maths. I have supervised undergraduate BSc and 3rd and 4th year medical school students with biomedical research projects and believe that I have the capable skills needed to tutor up secondary school students. Additionally, I also have experience in teaching English to students in a tutorial centre at the primary and secondary school level as well as teaching science to primary school students as a teacher and a teacher’s aide. Having played competitive volleyball at the university level as captain of the King’s College London men’s volleyball team as well as competitive basketball at the high school level (obtained 2nd place in national inter-schools league), I believe I also have the skills required to coach in these two sports. As well, I have been working as a free-lance tennis coach and personal trainer for the past 2 years.
From a very young age, I have always looked up highly to my teachers and I believe they helped instill in me character traits that have helped me in my learning throughout my student and professional career. These are traits such as diligence, perseverance, and compassion. These are traits that I hope to impart on my own students through the teaching and support that I hope to offer.
