About Amy
I am a 4th year Oxford University medical student, and achieved a first class BA degree in pre-clinical medicine from Oxford in 2023. At GCSE, I received 11 Level 9s at GCSE, and three A*s at A Level (Biology, Chemistry, Maths) in 2020.
I have been regularly tutoring with the company Medic Paths since 2021, where I take weekend classes in biology, chemistry, maths and physics for 15-30 students at a time. I have also been tutoring 1-1 GCSE and A level biology for over a year with several students.

I begin my sessions with clear information about the topics we are going to cover, and why these topics are important by fitting them into a wider context. For example, for the nervous system, I would explain that we’re going to study the different types of nerves, how their structure relates to function, etc. and that studying this is important because the nervous system is the connection between our brain and all our organs; it keeps us breathing when we’re asleep, allows us to voluntarily move our arms up and down, stops us from fainting every time that we fall asleep by regulating our blood pressure. I believe hearing the importance of what the session is about gets the students excited and in the right mindset to learn.
My tutoring sessions then start with a quiz to gauge baseline knowledge, and from this I can assess how quickly to go through the basic concepts before approaching the more detailed content later in the session. I make sure to re-emphasise important points that are often frequently asked about in exams, as spaced repetition is critical for retaining information. Repetition ensures that information can be easily recalled, even under exam pressure, making sure you get every mark possible in your exams.
With regards to more detailed content, I always make sure I allow enough time during the session to go through these topics slowly. I always reference any diagrams on the slide, as I believe visualisation allows for better understanding, as well as improving how long a concept is remembered for. I again gauge from quizzes how successfully I’ve taught the students, and if needs be, I will go back and explain again the more difficult concepts.
When going through exam questions with my students, I give them time to think for themselves before going through the answers, and I always explain the answer. Also, perhaps even more importantly, I explain why other answers do NOT get the mark, and highlight any key words required in the answers. I believe spending time explaining answers to the students is really important, since the GCSE mark scheme for the sciences tends to be very rigorous and unforgiving if a key word is missed!
Overall, I always ensure I have a very enthusiastic demeanour in sessions, and constantly remind the students why this topic is important, perhaps sometimes by throwing in a small fact on how what they’re learning relates to medicine. I feel like this keeps the students engaged and wanting to learn!
