About Fergus
I am a passionate and academically outstanding 4th-year medical student at the University of Manchester, having joined the course in its 3rd year after gaining a First-class BSc (Hons) in Medicine from the University of St Andrews.
I initially began teaching as a way to consolidate my own learning in my very first year of university, before discovering that I found real joy in helping others understand and apply knowledge - since then I have expanded the amount I teach and gained considerable experience in teaching undergraduate medical students. My motivation has always been to try and share the joy I get from medicine with others.
My passion for medical knowledge and academic rigour has led to the receipt of a number of awards and prizes across the Universities of St Andrews and Manchester, including the Miller Prize for the most outstanding student in the Faculties of Science and Medicine, and various academic achievement awards in each year of study completed so far.

Typical lesson
A typical lesson would be 1 hour long, and generally we would begin with an area of particular difficulty for the tutee and work through it, before expanding on that topic and placing it in context clinically. Lessons are extremely flexible and can be tailored to each individual tutee depending on their needs - for instance one-off sessions to sharpen exam technique, or a longer period of sessions teaching a particular area or subject.
Approach
My approach builds knowledge from a basic level upwards, focusing on developing a true understanding of underlying scientific theory before placing it into clinical practice. I also help tutees develop the critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills crucial to future medical practice.
Experience
I have extensive experience of teaching undergraduate medical students in formal and informal contexts, ranging from small-group discussions to large lectures. This has included a large number of teaching sessions delivered as part of university societies, with excellent feedback.
Who I tutor
I offer lessons to medical students in all years, irrespective of age/university/location. Lessons can be adjusted based on the curriculum of the tutee's medical school.
