I'm a third generation brass player. My father ran a Boys' Brigade brass band and taught my three brothers and me to play in it. We all became members of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, although not all at the same time. I left school at the age of 16 but after working for two years decided to study classical music full time. At the age of 23 I was assistant principal hornplayer in the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra in Reykjavik, Iceland - I once played first horn in an opera highlights concert featuring the great Luciano Pavarotti. I also played horn in a couple of London West End shows (My Fair Lady and Cats).
I did a Masters degree at UEA, Norwich, where I was awarded a distinction for horn playing and music recording. I've worked as a brass teacher and band and choir conductor in the UK and in Iceland, and the Faroe Islands and in Istanbul, Turkey. I also do a bit of compostion and arranging. A few years ago I taught music theory to teenagers at a local college of further education. The college didn't provide me with any teaching resources so I had to make my own - I therefore have my own 90 page manual for teaching theory. (I like writing teaching material and am the author of several publications for brass beginners.) My approach to teaching music theory is rather different to the traditional Associated Board method, but I'm happy to help students who are planning to take ABRSM examinations.
I actually like teaching theory. Although it's traditionally regarded as a 'difficult' subject I believe that it's quite easy to learn because there are no exceptions to the rules. Unfortunately, many students get off to a bad start with the subject because they have lessons at school which they don't understand and then conclude that the subject is too difficult for them. As a child I did theory at a Saturday morning music school back in the 1960s and I hadn't a clue what it was for or why I was doing it. It was only when I started to study music at a higher level that I began to see the point of all those weird exercises in the Associated Board work books. I think that anyone who listens to music or plays an instrument can understand the system and learn to read music surprisingly easily. I enjoy explaining things
and making things simple to understand and I get 'job satisfaction' from sharing my knowledge.
